In China, freedom of expression and freedom of association do not exist.

Kong Youping, 53 years old, was formerly an official trade union leader in the factory where he worked in Anshan, Liaoning province (North-East China).

In 1998, he was imprisoned for joining the local section of the banned China Democracy Party. About thirty members of this party are still in prison.

On 13 December 2003, he was arrested for posting five articles and seven poems on an overseas website calling for democratic reforms, the re-assessment of the 1989 pro-democracy movement and the end of political corruption

On 16 September 2004, Kong was charged with "incitement to subvert state power" and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment by the Shenyang Court in Liaoning. He is currently detained in Shenyang.

The China 2008 Olympics Collective calls for the immediate and unconditional release of KONG Youping.
